Sherira Gaon

Sherira Gaon
(906-1006)
Babylonian gaon. He was gaon of Pumbedita (968-98) in succession to his father, Hanina, and his grandfather, Judah. With his son Hai Gaon, Sherira maintained contact by means of responsa, with Jews in North Africa, Spain and elsewhere. In an important epistle in response to an inquiry from Kairouan, he described the origins of the Mishnah and the Talmud and the traditions of the sevoraim and the geonim. He also wrote commentaries on the Bible and talmudic tractates. During the last years of his life he was imprisoned by the caliph Kadir.
